Fire Safety:

Since you are burning things, it is wise to be sure to use a fire-safe cauldron or other container to catch the embers in. Using a layer of sand at the bottom is a good idea. Be aware of your surroundings: flammable items or pets nearby, clothing should be considered and long/loose hair can ignite from the heat if too close.

If smudging indoors, the excessive smoke will set off smoke detectors, so opening windows and doors is advisable.

If smudging outdoors, it’s wise to be mindful of the seasonal conditions: is the environment dry around you?

Be aware of the embers that burn off and float away & that fall into the container around the bundle. They can burn clothing, altar cloths or other flammable items they land on or are held against.
